Canada PGWP: the work permit is decided by the programme you pick

A post-graduation work permit is not something you apply for at the end. It is something your course either qualifies you for or does not, on the day you accept the offer.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit lets you work in Canada after you finish studying. It is the reason a large share of students choose Canada at all, and it is the thing most often taken for granted.

Here is the part people miss. Eligibility is not decided when you apply for the permit. It is decided when you choose the institution and the programme, often a year earlier, frequently by an agent who is paid by the college.

What decides eligibility

Three things, and you can check all of them before you accept an offer.

  • The institution. It must be a designated learning institution, and not every designated institution leads to a work permit. Public colleges and universities are treated differently from some private ones, and partnership arrangements between them have their own rules.
  • The programme. Length matters, and so does the credential. Very short programmes do not qualify, and the permit length is tied to the length of the study.
  • The field, in some cases. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has applied field-of-study requirements to certain applicants, and that list has been revised more than once.

Because the field list has changed, treat any list you are shown by a recruiter as out of date until you have checked it against the IRCC page yourself.

The question to ask before you accept

Ask the institution, in writing, one question. Does this specific programme, at this specific campus, lead to PGWP eligibility for an international student starting on this date?

A real institution will answer plainly. An answer that avoids the question, or points you at a brochure, is itself the answer.

What else affects it

  • You must study full time for most of your programme, so dropping to part time to work more can cost you the permit.
  • You apply within a fixed window after you receive confirmation of completion, and missing that window is final.
  • Study permit conditions still apply while you study, including limits on work hours. Breaching them is a separate problem that can reach the permit.

Why this matters more than the ranking

Students compare universities on rankings and tuition. For a student whose plan includes working in Canada afterwards, eligibility is worth more than either. A cheaper programme that does not qualify is not cheaper. It is a year of fees and no route forward.

Where to check

IRCC publishes the eligibility requirements and the current field-of-study rules. Read them there, on the day you are deciding, and confirm the programme with the institution in writing.

Send us the offer before you accept it. We check the institution, the programme and the dates against the current rules, and tell you plainly whether the plan you have in mind actually works.

Before you act on this

Rules move, and this was written on 20 October 2026. Check any figure against the authority that sets it, or ask the counsellor who handles your destination.
